Education and Family: Two Sides of the Same Coin

As a passionate advocate for education, I believe that every child in Richmond deserves access to a high-quality school, regardless of their zip code or family income. But I also know that education doesn't happen in a vacuum. When we invest in strengthening our families, we lay the foundation for our kids to succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Quality education is the key to unlocking opportunity. Our teachers need the resources to excel, class sizes must be small enough for personalized attention, and every school should have modern facilities and cutting-edge technology. But we can't ignore the fact that our kids carry their families' struggles with them into the classroom. When parents are stressed about making ends meet, when there's not enough food on the table, when a family teeters on the brink of homelessness, those challenges make focusing on learning a steep uphill battle.

That's why advancing family-focused tax policies is so critical. By putting more money back in the pockets of working families, we can help relieve some of that stress. We can ensure parents have the resources to provide for their kids' basic needs, invest in their education, and save for their future. When we support paid family leave, affordable childcare, and programs that combat hunger and homelessness, we create the stable environments where kids can thrive.

For Richmond Public Schools, this means more students coming to class ready to learn, more families able to engage with their kids' education, and more resources for our schools to attract and retain top teachers. It means closing the opportunity gap and setting every student up for success, no matter what their family is facing.

Check out the video below (@ 11:30) to hear why I support advancing family-focused tax policies and how they can benefit our Richmond community. Together, we can build stronger families and better schools. Our kids deserve nothing less.
